Indian stars will be truly global soon: Shah Rukh Khan

Indian stars will be truly global soon: Shah Rukh Khan

With younger Indian filmmakers exposed to western cinema and western culture making different types of films, Indian stars will be truly global, "much sooner than anyone would expect", says Bollywood's superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

"The younger filmmakers, I think are completely new-thinking people. They have learned the technique and technology, and writing from the western world," Shah Rukh told CNN in an interview telecast here Sunday.

Youth "in our country now is also understanding different kind of cinema, because they're also exposed to because of television, Internet," he said. "So, they're like, OK, we can compare.

"And somehow Indians at this juncture feel, you know what? To be really proud, we need to make films which make a mark in the world," Shah Rukh said.

Asked if he imagined there maybe a time when Indian stars will be truly global, he said: "Much sooner than anyone would expect, most certainly" even though "all the main standard in the world becomes how much dollar value that finally the business brings, and that's how you're big."

"But I can see it happening in the next five or six years, very easily," Shah Rukh Khan said seeing the use of Hindi language in Indian films as another problem giving Hollywood "a big advantage" as they speak in English.

"But the time is coming now, because ...if you see a new Indian film, you'll realise that the language is more 'Hinglish'" he said referring to the use of liberal use of English terms in Hindi films.

"You know, we're using, and we don't have to translate it anymore, everyone understands it. And everyone uses it every day."

Shah Rukh also agreed India may soon be able to present its own world cinema. "Absolutely," he said noting that with globalisation "the language as a barrier will start breaking down. Culture as a barrier will start breaking down."

"So, all that will break down and other cinemas will come over, will come, and they'll use the technology and a lot of technicians from here," he said.

"But stories, every country has a story to tell. And once it reaches a certain standard in terms of technique, I think the world would like to watch it."

Gallant Arjun Rampal lends his coat to keep Katrina warm

Gallant Arjun Rampal lends his coat to keep Katrina warm

Katrina Kaif received a warm welcome at a media meet to promote her upcoming "Raajneeti" here Saturday evening, but the cold blast from the air conditioner had her shivering, until co-actor Arjun Rampal gallantly took off his coat and offered it to her.

Dressed in a short, sleeveless, pink dress, Katrina found it too cold at the venue.

"It's way too cold here. It's so cold!" Katrina was seen whispering to Katrina Kaif and Arjun Rampal on the stage.

While Ranbir chose to nod his head, Arjun displayed chivalry by taking off his black overcoat and handed it to Katrina. She immediately grabbed it and placed it on her legs, which were hidden behind a table on the stage.

Moments later, actor Nana Patekar too was seen trying to get the temperature in control by requesting hotel officials to do the needful.

"Raajneeti" is a dark political drama and features Manoj Bajpai, Ajay Devgn, Naseeruddin Shah, apart from Nana, Arjun, Ranbir and Katrina, who plays the role of a politician. I am smart: Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu, whose much-awaited film "Pankh" directed by Sudipto Chattopadhyay released Friday, boasts that if she had not been smart and intelligent, she wouldn't be where she's now.

"If you all have been seeing me over the years, you know that I have a good level of smartness," Bipasha told reporters Thursday night at Mumbai's Le Sutra hotel where she unveiled the Globetrotter Glam special issue of Marie Claire magazine.

"It's a tough job being an actor and (that too) being an actor coming from outside without any support system, making your name in this business," she added.

"I think if I was not smart and intelligent I wouldn't have been here today on the cover of s. It's very important to be smart and have a personality," the actress added.

Bipasha even gave some tips for the scorching Indian summer.

She believes cotton clothes are the best for the season. "Being in a country like India, I think it's very important that we wear clothes friendly to the weather. Any kind of cotton clothing like linen pyjamas, linen dresses and shorts with sandals - I think that's what is needed for this weather," she said.

The actress recommended taking more water and juices to keep one's system hydrated during summer.

"In summer we need hydration because it is really hot in India. So I would suggest drinking lots of water, fluids, juices and curd with your food. You need to keep your system a little cooler and hydrated all the times," she said.

Filmmakers should come out of comfort zones: Hrithik Roshan

Filmmakers should come out of comfort zones: Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik Roshan, who will be seen sporting a new look in his forthcoming release "Kites", has never hesitated from experimenting in his 10 years in the industry. He says leaving the safety zone and trying something different is the need of the hour.

" 'Kites' is a very honest film. That was the brief that my father and Anurag Basu gave to the entire team while making 'Kites'. We do not want to be within the safety zone influenced by manipulative commercial thinking," Hrithik, looking his best in a red and white check shirt and blue jeans, told IANS in an interview.

"Nothing in the film - no dialogues or no moments that try to provoke claps, tears or laughter. It's a very simple straightforward love story, something that would happen in real life and following that thread whatever fell into place has made the film what it is," said the actor.

The 36-year-old, who has done a range of movies - from sci-fi to superhero, from historical to romantic sagas - feels filmmakers should try to come out of their comfort zones and make films from their heart.

"It's time to let go of all our safety nets and be out there and tell a story through our hearts and not bother who is listening. We should make films with a thought as if no one is there to judge us. Like this we will produce better and more honest films," he said.

"Kites", a film about an Indian man's affair with a Latin woman and their predicament as they don't understand each other's language, is being made in Hindi and English. The English version of "Kites" has been presented and reworked by well-known Hollywood director Brett Ratner.

Produced by Hrithik's father and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, the film will be distributed and marketed by Reliance BIG Pictures.

Directed by Anurag Basu, the movie also stars Mexican actress Barbara Mori and Kangana Ranaut. It has been shot in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Santa Fe and will release May 21 in over 60 countries.

Hrithik, last seen in Ashutosh Gowariker's "Jodhaa Akbar", worked on "Kites" for almost two-and-a-half years. The actor says he is incapable of multi-tasking and believes in doing one thing at a time and giving it his best.

"I can't multi-task. When I'm doing one film, I go completely into it and give my heart and soul to it. I got this inspiration from the Tinkle comic books that I used to read as a child.

"It used to advocate that one should stick to one thing and give one's best to that instead of putting your hand in everything," said Hrithik, who was at the Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM studio in the capital to promote his film.

Hrithik met with a couple of accidents while shooting the movie - he hurt his knees while doing a dangerous car stunt in Las Vegas and later injured his arm while shooting in Filmistan Studio in Mumbai.

When asked what kind of audience reaction he expected after putting in so much effort, Hrithik said: "I hope they like the film. Audience reaction is my access point to growth. They have loved me for 10 years and I feel truly blessed."

The actor also broke his silence on the controversy that surrounded the film regarding an alleged link-up between him and Barbara. "Certain sections of the media had tried to instigate and provoke, but the truth always comes out. So it was just a matter of time," he said.

He also said Barbara would arrive in India April 16 and stay in the country for a month.

Tom and Jerry dance to Punjabi tunes on 70th birthday party

The world's most popular cat and mouse - Tom & Jerry celebrated their 70th birthday in the capital Wednesday by dancing to Punjabi number "Ahun ahun" from the movie "Love Aaj Kal", leaving children and the audience asking for more.

Two models dressed up as the popular animated characters laughed, danced, received a lifetime achievement award and even cut a huge cake at the celebrations, which saw around 100 children cheering happily. A tattoo corner, mini golf course, photo booth and a jigsaw to solve, were other attractions there for the kids.

"'Tom & Jerry' has completed 70 years of existence this year and we wished to promote this in the first quarter of 2010. So we planned a lot of activities and this was the grand celebration here today," Monica Tata, vice president and deputy general manager - entertainment networks, South Asia, Turner International India, told IANS.

Special shows were aired March and April on popular Cartoon Network channel to mark the 70th year of the cartoon show, which is beamed across the country in Hindi, English, Tamil and Telegu.

The show is being aired in India for the past 13 years and it has till date, managed to strike a chord with people of all ages.

Indian cartoonist Sudhir Tailang, who too was present along with stand-up comedian Vir Das for the party, says Tom & Jerry tops his list of favourite cartoon shows even after so many years.

"Tom & Jerry is a slapstick sitcom. And unlike their age, the characters are young and energetic. I love to watch it and I have been watching these since a lot of years. They have been an inspiration for most of my political cartoon strips," Tailang told IANS.

"Indian politics is quite like a cat-mouse chase. I feel the Indian voter is the mouse and ruler is the cat," he quipped.

Cartoon Network currently has 161 episodes of the show to air and has no plans to add new content to the series, said Tata. "Chooha Billi Chor Police" - the Indian version of Tom & Jerry airs every Monday-Thursday for an hour and a half in the evening.

Now, Congress mum on Bachchan row

Having criticised actor Amitabh Bachchan over the past few days for accepting to be Gujarat's brand ambassador, the Congress Wednesday refused to comment further on the issue.

"I have nothing further to add," party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said to repeated questions on Bachchan.

Asked about reports in the media about the party having decided not to speak against Bachchan, party leaders said unofficially that no such decision had been taken.

The Congress' criticism of Bachchan followed protest by some party workers last week over his presence at the inauguration of the Bandra-Worli sea link extension.

The Congress said its workers "were upset" over his being brand ambassador of the Narendra Modi-led Gujarat government.
